Cruelty Free Lip Balms

I have always loved lip balm- but one thing always confused me. Why does regular lip balm make the skin on my lips peel? Surely, it's meant to prevent that from happening? I never thought anything of it until I started to find out the horrors of the chemicals used in our favourite beauty products.

You may already know that petroleum jelly is a possible carcinogen and isn't as healthy as they make it out to be.
Petroleum jelly does go through multiple filters to make sure it's 'safe' - But do you really still want to use something that has to be filtered That much to make it so?

You can find petroleum Jelly alternatives from the website Hand Made Naturals - Linked below.

But I've got dry lips. What can I use to help them?

To prevent dry lips from peeling, A lip balm must be breathable, contain vitamin E, and have no harsh ingredients.

I started looking for a reasonably priced lip balm... A 100% natural lip balm...

This sounded like a tough challenge! To find something natural, A low carbon footprint AND vegan - for under £5?!

Made in the UK? - Yes!

Natural? - Yes!

Vegan? - YES!

£5 and under? - Yes!

HandMade Naturals

This alternative is completely petroleum jelly free and hand made in the UK! Sounds rather luxurious doesn't it? They offer multiple sizes - including the 15ml handbag size for just £3.95

Figs and Rouge

At £4.95 from Naturisimo with Free delivery, Figs and Rouge lip balm makes a nice treat, and a lovely gift.

The tin is beautiful - a great present for a friend, or a marvellous stocking filler for Christmas.

My favourite is the Pomegranate. It reminds me of tropical jelly sweets, and feels amazing quality.

The Wild cherry flavour is okay, It's not my personal choice, but it's very popular at Infinity Foods brighton. I would definitely buy this flavour for my eldest sister as she loves cherry scented lip balms.

I bought my other sister the Cocoa and Vanilla flavour balm - She loved the scent and commented that it lasted a very long time.

The tins are so pretty!  You won't want to throw it away once it's empty - Perfect for storing mints, chewing gum, or the small things that get lost in your bag.

Sadly, some of the lip balms do contain benzyl alcohol. Despite this being a natural ingredient, I try to avoid these types of ingredients, but that's for personal reasons. Fortunately, the Pomegranate lip balm does not contain is ingredient.

Tropic Skincare

I recently discovered Tropic Skincare, who offer a Lip Balm that can also be used for elbows and heels - Not bad for £5

The ingredients are very pure and has some great reviews - I'm looking forward to trying it!

What about low-zero waste options?

Not only is this probably cheaper, making your own could have a positive impact on the environment too, especially if you source ingredients with a low carbon footprint. (This might be a little tricky in the UK as coconut oil and others are usually imported)

You can easily buy ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter - melt with a carrier oil like rapeseed or sunflower oil as a base to make your own, then add a few drops of an essential oil you love and edible glitter for that added luxury touch. Dispense into your old lip balm tin or something similar and place in the fridge until it is set.

Choose 1-3 oils to turn your lip balm into something magickal
